 The Bastides of western Aveyron

Classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages. Visit its castle, which dates from the 10th,

12th and 15th centuries, its bridge and its 15th-century church.

-         Peyrusse-le-Roc

Ghostly ruins on a rocky outcrop.

-         Villeneuve-d’Aveyron

A 13th-century bastide built around an ancient township with a monastery at its centre.

-         Villefranche-de-Rouergue

An ancient royal bastide, with its Notre-Dame collegiate church and a pleasant street market on Thursday morning.

-         Najac

A bastide which is an extension of the original fortification overlooked by its imposing castle.

-         Sauveterre-de-Rouergue

A perfect example of a typical bastide.

-         Rodez

 

Albi and Toulouse-Lautrec:

 

-         Rodez (leaving in the direction of Baraqueville and Naucelle)

-         Camjac

The Château du Bosc, where the painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec spent his childhood.

The Cathédrale Sainte-Cécile, the Musée Toulouse-Lautrec and the mediaeval quarter of Castelviel.

The tallest viaduct in the world (343m high). Views over the Brocuéjouls rest area (A75 motorway) and the Cazalous rest area (on the road to Roquefort).

Visit the caves where the famous cheese is made (Roquefort Société or Papillon brands).

Conques and the Lot Valley

An Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée (AOC) wine. Visit a wine-grower (Teulier, Matha or Laurens) or the Cave Coopérative de Marcillac in Valady.

-         Conques

Classified as one of France’s most beautiful villages, Conques is among the best-knownstopovers on the road to Santiago de Compostela. The 11th- and 12th-century abbey-church with its celebrated tympanum, which depicts the Last Judgment, and the Pilgrims’ Bridge are on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. The painter Pierre Soulages recently designed new stained-glass windows for the Romanesque abbey-church.

-         Entraygues

Its bridge and the Lot Valley.

-         Estaing

Classified as one of the France’s most beautiful villages. Visit its castle and bridge.

-         Espalion

A pretty little town in the northern Aveyron.

-         Bozouls

The “Hole of Bozouls” (a canyon). Terra Memoria, an interactive museum devoted to the geology of the Aveyron.

-         Rodez

You can visit several workshops where this village’s famous pocket-knives are made. Also worth visiting is the Coopérative Jeune Montagne, where you can taste Laguiole cheese.
