What you can visit in Belcastel
Why not kick off your visit by wending your way up the village's steep cobbled streets, or "calades", to the castle? That will enable you to admire Belcastel's restored houses, two shoeing smithies, two bread ovens and some extraordinary roofs.
Then you can cross the superb 15th-century bridge to the church, which dates from the same period and is dedicated to Sainte Marie-Madeleine. A bay was added to it in the 19th century.
The building contains a monument and some listed statues :
-the tom of the Seigneur of Belcastel, Alzias de Saunhac, on which his recumbent statues lies.
-a 14th-century statuette of a Virgin and child.
-a 15th-century statuette of Sainte Madeleine.
-a 15th-century statuette of Saint Christophe.
Others sites are well worth visiting:
The seats of the Seigneur (take pedestrian footpath N°1):
Carved out of the rock of Roquecante, these seats are believed to date from the 16th century. They may have been put there simply because people liked to visit the site, which affords a very beautiful view.
The Roc d'Anglars and the Lourdou (take pedestrian footpath N°2):
The Roc d'Anglars is a small fortress about 20 metres in diameter, parts of which date from the 5th century. The construction is believed to have served as an outlying post of the castle. During the French Revolution, the fortress was apparently used as a refuge by non-juring priests.
The Lourdou is a cave at the foot of the Roc d'Anglars on the banks of the River Aveyron. It is somewhat reminiscent of the Grotte de Massabielle in Lourdes. A statue of the Virgin Mary stands in one of the recesses in the rock face. Several times year a priest celebrates mass in front of the altar, which is always with flowers
